Day 1: Diagnosis

Today, I got a call from a doctor. He told me that I have Type 2 Diabetes. Three weeks ago, if you'd asked me what that was, I really wouldn't have been able to tell you. I knew it "has something to do with blood sugar".

He also told me that I have high cholesterol and that he thinks I have a fatty liver, which sounds like something delicious, but is actually kind of a bummer, as you'll see in a moment.

This doctor was not my regular doctor from Kaiser. He was a clinical pharmacist, apparently. He seemed pretty knowledgeable and answered my zillions of questions. I was thinking about documenting what he told me here in order to see if those suppositions bear out over time.

Q is me, A is him:

Q: Does fiber content in the food I eat matter?
A: No. The sugars still get into your blood, increased fiber just makes that take longer?

Q: Is it all about the carbs?
A: In terms of blood sugar, yes. However, since you have a fatty liver, you don't want to eat too much fat and make that worse and too much protein will probably raise your cholesterol, so you don't get a reprieve there either.

Earlier in the day, I bought three books and a ladder from Amazon. The ladder had nothing to do with my diabetes.
